Awarded the 32nd Inoue Harunari Prize for the development of “Nano Composite W”
Mizutani Paint Co., Ltd. (President: Shigehiko Mizutani) and Kyoto Institute of Technology (Professor: Yoshiharu Kimura) have been awarded the 32nd (FY2007) Inoue Harunari Prize by the Inoue Harunari Prize Committee (Chairman: Noriki Okimura, President, Japan Science and Technology Agency).
The key feature of this development is the world’s first successful commercial production of a novel material: a nano-composite emulsion (organic-inorganic hybrid emulsion). This emulsion dramatically improves the dispersion stability of colloidal silica dispersed at the nano level through original nanotechnology. Furthermore, this nano-composite emulsion was applied and commercialized as an exterior wall coating with high stain resistance and low environmental impact.
This development significantly improves the stain resistance weakness inherent in general-purpose exterior emulsion paints. By replacing the resin component with nano-dispersed silica, it also contributes substantially to preserving and improving the global environment through reduced petroleum resource consumption.
The award ceremony was held on July 11 at the Keidanren Kaikan.
